Venous Access in Houston, TX

Expert Placement of CVACs, PICC Lines & Port-a-Caths for Patients Needing Long-Term IV Access

If you are undergoing treatment for infections requiring antibiotics, anemia requiring iron infusions or blood transfusions, or chemotherapy, your doctor may order a central venous access catheter (CVAC) or peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) to be placed in your veins.

At Premier Vein & Vascular Center, our board-certified interventional radiologists place venous access devices that give doctors a reliable way to reach your central veins without repeated needle sticks. We focus on personalized care and comfortable, minimally invasive procedures.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCEDURE

What Is Venous Access?

Venous access procedures provide doctors with a way to readily reach some of your central veins without the need to start frequent IV lines in your arm or hand. A central venous access catheter (CVAC) is a tube inserted beneath the skin and into a major vein, typically in the chest, allowing your care team to draw blood or administer medications and nutrients easily, quickly, and without causing you unnecessary pain.

These devices are a way to avoid the discomfort, bruising, and irritation caused by multiple injections, and are commonly used for patients undergoing chemotherapy, dialysis, or extended antibiotic, antifungal, or nutritional therapy.

OVERVIEW

A Look at Venous Access Procedure

If you are undergoing treatment for infections requiring antibiotics, anemia requiring iron infusions or blood transfusions, or chemotherapy, your doctor may order a central venous access catheter (CVAC) or peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) to be placed in your veins. Venous access procedures provide doctors with a way to readily reach some of your central veins without the need to start frequent IV lines in your arm or hand.

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

Types of Venous Access Devices

CVAC / Central Line

A central venous access catheter (CVAC) is a tube inserted beneath the skin and into a major vein, typically in the chest. It allows doctors and nurses to draw blood or administer medications and nutrients easily, quickly, and without causing pain, helping you avoid the discomfort and bruising caused by multiple injections.

PICC Line

A peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC line) is inserted into a smaller vein in the upper arm, and the tube continues through the vein into a larger vein in the chest. PICC lines are often used for extended courses of antibiotics, antifungals, or nutritional support.

Port-a-Cath

A port-a-cath is a central venous access catheter with a reservoir implanted just under the skin in the upper chest. No tube is visible from the skin, making it a discreet option often used for patients undergoing chemotherapy or dialysis treatments.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOU

Who Needs Venous Access?

WHAT TO EXPECT

Process for Venous Access Procedures

How the Procedure Works

Your CVAC will be placed by an interventional radiologist. You may be given medication to help you relax, and the area around the site will be numbed. Next, a needle will be inserted into the venous access point to create a tunnel into which the CVAC will be placed.

The tip of the central venous access catheter reaches into a large vein, and the other end remains outside your skin. In the case of a port-a-cath, a small chamber containing a silicone septum is connected with the tube in the vein and placed just under the skin in the chest or, in some cases, the arm. Patients may feel slight discomfort and pressure during the procedure.

Preparing for Your Procedure

To prepare for your CVAC, your nurse or doctor will provide you with specific instructions. Your doctor may tell you to consume only clear liquids after midnight on the night before your procedure.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE

What to Expect After Placement

Most patients experience only mild soreness or tenderness at the insertion site for a day or two after placement. Your care team will show you how to keep the site clean and dry and how to care for your catheter or port between uses.

WHY IT HELPS

Benefits of Venous Access

Fewer Needle Sticks

Once placed, a venous access device lets your care team draw blood and give medications without repeated needle sticks, reducing discomfort and vein damage over time.

Safer Medication Delivery

Central venous access allows certain medications and nutrients to be delivered directly into a large, fast-flowing vein, which can be safer and more comfortable than smaller peripheral veins.

Built for Long-Term Treatment

CVACs, PICC lines, and port-a-caths are designed to stay in place for extended treatment courses, making ongoing chemotherapy, dialysis, or antibiotic therapy more convenient.

COVERAGE

Insurance for Venous Access Procedures

Venous access procedures are typically ordered by your treating physician as part of your broader medical care, and most major insurance plans provide coverage. Our team can help verify your benefits and answer questions about coverage before your procedure.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is venous access?

Venous access refers to procedures that place a catheter, such as a CVAC, PICC line, or port-a-cath, into a major vein so your care team can draw blood or deliver medications, fluids, or nutrition without repeated needle sticks.

What is the difference between a CVAC, PICC line, and port-a-cath?

A CVAC is a tube placed beneath the skin into a major vein, typically in the chest. A PICC line is inserted into a vein in the upper arm and threaded into a larger chest vein. A port-a-cath has a reservoir implanted under the skin with no tube visible outside the body.

Is the venous access procedure painful?

The area is numbed before placement, and most patients feel only slight pressure or discomfort during the procedure. Mild soreness at the site afterward is common and typically resolves within a day or two.

How long can a venous access device stay in place?

CVACs, PICC lines, and port-a-caths are designed for longer-term use and can remain in place for weeks to months, depending on your treatment plan and your doctor’s recommendations.

How is a venous access device maintained?

Your care team will provide instructions for keeping the site clean, changing dressings, and flushing the catheter as needed to keep it working properly and reduce the risk of infection.

Who typically needs venous access?

Patients undergoing chemotherapy, dialysis, extended antibiotic or antifungal therapy, frequent iron infusions or blood transfusions, or long-term nutritional support often benefit from venous access.

Is venous access placement covered by insurance?

Most major insurance plans cover venous access procedures when ordered by your treating physician. Our team can help verify your specific benefits before your appointment.

Who performs the venous access procedure?

Your CVAC, PICC line, or port-a-cath is placed by a board-certified interventional radiologist using image guidance for precise, minimally invasive placement.
