What Is a Venous Ultrasound?

A venous ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and completely painless imaging procedure. Using high-frequency sound waves, it allows our specialists to see inside your blood vessels, detect blood clots, blockages, and other abnormalities without needles, dyes, or radiation.
This diagnostic tool is used to identify venous diseases and other vascular issues, giving your care team the detailed information needed to build a treatment plan that’s right for you.

Types of Exams

Three Types of Venous Ultrasound

Venous Reflux Ultrasound

Assesses how well the valves in your veins are functioning, helping diagnose venous insufficiency and identify which veins are allowing blood to flow backward.

Venous Doppler Ultrasound

Measures the speed and direction of blood flow, evaluating how blood moves through the arteries and veins in your legs.

Venous Duplex Ultrasound

Combines traditional B-mode imaging with Doppler technology to detect vein narrowing, blood clots, artery blockages, and other vascular abnormalities in a single exam.

Why Is a Venous Ultrasound Needed?

Your specialist may order a venous ultrasound to check for signs of blood clots or blockages, most often in the veins of the legs. It is an essential tool for diagnosing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), varicose veins, and chronic venous insufficiency.

1. Preparation

No special preparation is typically needed. You do not need to fast or adjust your medications.

2. Gel & Probe

A clear gel is applied to your skin and a handheld probe is gently moved over the area — no needles are involved.

3. Imaging

Sound waves create real-time images of your veins, showing blood flow and any clots or blockages.

4. Duration

The exam is completely painless and typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
